Key considerations when illness strikes…

When you are not well and physically you have all the proof to show you that you feel crap, it’s extremely hard to do a re-frame/mindset shift to feel better now, when everything is pointing to the contrary.

Who agrees?

This past week, I’ve had sinusitis which then migrated to my lungs, I have not felt myself at all, and of course had thoughts and stories around it’s not fair, how did I get this, my nose is my weakness, I should be able to fight this more easily, nothing is working etc etc etc.

I mean, we are after all, meaning making machines – as in, we give meaning and a story to everything, based on our experiences and programming. Agree?

Sure, it’s winter and quite normal to get a cold each year, however I rarely get sick and when I do, I have my trusty range of herbs (andrographis and echinacea) and nutrients I take (zinc, c, D) and I’m fine within a couple of days.

This time, it’s lingering, I’m doing all the usual stuff and more, and one minute I am on the up and up, and the next minute I am not. I’m eating well, staying hydrated, taking it easy, doing a strong herbal cough mix every two hours, lots of thyme (great for lungs), garlic, 35+ real good honey (high peroxide levels), fess spray with eucalyptus, inhalations, salt water nasal flushes and gargles (no sore throat mind you).

However, what I do know is, being in the energy of frustration, anger or fear, which many of us sit in alot, is contracting, putting you into higher stress states aka stress hormones and survival mode and will undo and counteract alot of the “good” things you are doing to get well. The complete opposite to the healing mode we need to tap into, especially when not well.

Whenever we go into calming the body and more of the parasympathetic nervous system mode or rest and digest, we allow the body to be more in the healing receptive state.

Of course, this is not saying don’t seek medical advice, which absolutely you need to if it persists, gets worse or concerns you, that is common sense! Leverage the best of what nature has and science, why wouldn’t you?!

I have sought medical advice and was issued an antibiotic prescription to fill if not improved or worse in a few days. In saying that, if it is a virus well the antibiotic won’t do much, but if it turns, sure I will use it and deal with the aftermath with all the but rebuilding protocols I know. In the meantime, I’ve got other natural antimicrobials I am doing.

What helps me so much is meditating and going inwards for direction. It’s amazing the feelings, images and intuitive hits that come through. I was shown a particular herb that I had completely forgotten about, which is actually registered as a medicine in Australia for the use of acute sinusitis or bronchitis and I witnessed great results over the years with it when I’d recommended to clients. So of course I am on to that and feeling a shift in symptoms after 4 doses.

Breathing at a slower rate, allowing my hands to move over my lungs and my nasal area, providing warmth and nurturing is all conducive to getting in the healing zone.

I have also been doing alot of hoʻoponopono, the Hawaiian healing and forgiveness practice, thanking my body for being a healing machine, I mean it really is. Loving my body for doing what it is doing to restore vitality and health. Asking my body to forgive me for all the things I have been doing to it that haven’t been from a place of love and gratitude, ie the rushing, the frustration, the stressing and pressure, the times I rush meals or look at it unkindly or eat things which really add no value to my body at all other than momentary pleasure.

I remind myself often that all the symptoms I am experiencing are the body’s way of mounting an immune response to eradicate any pathogen, expel matter and debris and return to balance as quickly as possible. It gives me so much comfort, strength and reassurance, when I really lean into that truth.

I am sharing this to remind us during “Cold & Flu” season, that should you fall ill, for whatever reason, pay attention to your thoughts, stories and feelings around it and pivot to a place of love and trust. Then of course leverage the best of what nature has and what science has as needed to support your healing journey back to equilibrium.
